Sad Day for Geeks Like Me

Gary Gygax muffed his last saving roll. (Which, since I just googled the phrase “saving roll” to make sure that I’m not too rusty after nearly two years of not playing, is pretty much how people are reporting it. I’m really not a very original writer.)

My Darling Boy

Tonight, we asked Butternut what the Zombies say.

“Grrrr,” he said. He might have followed that with “argh.”

Or, that might be wishful thinking.

He was afraid of the woman dressed as a bunny at Saturday’s Halloween party.

Happy little geek

I was just looking at an analysis I do about once a year. I find it very satisfying to know that I used simple mathematical theories — the kind you learn in fifth grade and then re-learn when you read Dedekind in your Math class, which is really a Philosophy of Mathematics class ’cause you went to St. John’s, to calculate the number of contributors giving to legislative campaigns.

Mundane Update

You’ll have to get your master or magical updates elsewhere.

Butternut started a new daycare on Monday. It’s smaller, it borrows from a philosophy of childrearing that emphasizes letting kids explore and de-emphasizing both praise and punishment and, as a bonus, Little A goes there. Butternut seems to enjoy it and seems to be becoming attached to the care givers. That said, he also seems to be having nightmares — I keep waking up at 2 and 3 a.m. because he’s crying in his sleep. (He doesn’t awaken, however.) So, he’s processing this stuff somehow. We are trying to talk with him about it, but it is hard to tell with pre-verbal toddlers whether any of it is useful.

In other news, the local section of the organization I volunteer for has “fired” me from the board — a fact I learned from the minutes of an executive committee meeting. To be fair, the person who was supposed to get in touch with me about it had some e-mail glitch that meant that the e-mail she sent timed to hit my box just before the minutes did bounced back. But, it’s just another example of how clueless the current administration of the local section is about acting in ways that not only comply with bylaws (which they do) but also honors the feelings of members and volunteers (about whom they could care less unless they are part of the clique).

On the other hand, someone nominated me to be recording secretary of the national organization, which would make me one of a handful of movers and shakers on the board. (And, by the way, if you know the organization of which I speak, please keep this information under your hat.) So, in case I was feeling insecure about the other, that’s verification that the decision to “fire” me is more about the other board members than it is about me.
