For the first time ever yesterday, we had to get off the highway and find a place for Butternut to pee. <–this is the milstone mentioned in the title, by the way.
After this little detour, Pumpkin was desperately trying to coax Butternut back into his car seat. Desperation turned to plain impatience; coaxing turned to forcing. Crying and angst ensued.
Butternut finally relented, and was soon settled and on to a completely different topic. Pumpkin, frustrated with his lack of saintliness, declared that he felt like he hadn’t done anything right all day.
“Well,” he amended, “that’s not true.”
Somehow, with just the kind of tone and timing impossible to convey in a blog post (so why am I even trying?) I managed to asked, “Name one thing you did right today?” in a way that had us virtually swerving off the road with laughter.
